Partnership with Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center
GCCISD School Programs
The Eddie V. Gray Wetlands Center, 1724 Market Street in Baytown, conducts the Wetlands Ecology Program for the fifth-graders and Liquid Science Program for seventh-graders in Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District each year.
During the school year, students meet at the Wetlands Center for a morning filled with educational programs and activities.
Then the students are taken by bus to Baytown Nature Center for an outdoor lunch. While they enjoy their lunch, they have a sweeping view of the wetlands at the nature center, the surrounding bays, and the Houston Ship Channel.
They often observe birds feeding in the wetlands. Following lunch, the students get a chance to observe and experience nature up close and personal through activities like bird watching, water analysis, identifying common wetlands plants, birds, animal tracks, and butterflies.
The students watch as staff members pull a seine net through the shallow waters of the marsh to catch small shrimp, crabs, fish, and other aquatic animals.
For many of the students, it will be their first opportunity to see and touch these aquatic critters that are common in our bays and wetland nurseries.
Wetlands Center Camps
The Baytown Nature Center is a field trip site for summer, spring and winter nature camps offered by the Wetlands Center.
